Planning a wedding in Central New York: barns, wineries and lake venues

This guide is for couples planning a wedding in Central New York, whether the picture in mind is a timber barn outside Jamesville, a lawn on Skaneateles Lake or a ballroom downtown. It covers the state marriage license, how far ahead venues book, and barn, winery, brewery, lakeside and historic-inn venues confirmed as booking weddings in October 2026, with notes on guest rooms and rain plans.

Prices and capacities come from each venue’s own site and change often. Get every number in writing before a deposit.

Getting the marriage license

The rules come from the state Department of Health, and the full version is on the department’s Getting Married in New York State page. The short version:

  • Both of you apply in person to any town or city clerk in New York and sign the application in front of the clerk. A representative cannot apply for you, even with a power of attorney.
  • The license is issued on the spot, but the ceremony cannot take place within 24 hours of the exact time it was issued. A state Supreme Court justice, or the county judge where either of you lives, can waive the wait.
  • The license is good for 60 calendar days, starting the day after it is issued. If one of you is on active U.S. military duty and shows proof, the window is 180 days.
  • Outside New York City the fee is $40, which includes a Certificate of Marriage Registration the clerk mails within 15 days after the officiant returns the signed license.
  • Both of you bring proof of age and identity, such as a birth certificate, passport or driver’s license. No blood test is required, and no one under 18 can marry.
  • The ceremony needs an authorized officiant and at least one witness, and a New York license works only for a ceremony in New York.

Office hours and appointment rules vary by clerk, so call first. In Syracuse, the City Clerk’s office issues marriage licenses and keeps weekday hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (315-448-8216).

When to book

Some venues book more than a year out. As of October 2026, The Orchards in Jamesville was booking 2027 and 2028 dates, and the Springside Inn on Owasco Lake was booking 2027 weddings. Barn seasons can be limited: Arlington Acres runs from late May through the end of October, and the wine cellar at Anyela’s Vineyards takes private events May through October.

Off-season dates can cost less. The January 2024 wedding brochure from The Pier listed a Saturday venue fee of $4,000 from May through October and $3,000 from November through April. For late-summer dates near Syracuse, check hotel rooms against the Great New York State Fair, which has set 2027 dates of August 25 through September 6, 2027.

Barn venues

Onondaga County

About 10 miles south of downtown Syracuse by the venue’s count, The Orchards on Apulia Road in Jamesville is a three-story, 5,200-square-foot timber-frame barn on 150 acres with a pond, a tree farm, apple trees and resident horses, alpacas and mini donkeys. The barn holds up to 250 guests, and the venue books one wedding per weekend, with access Friday through Saturday. Posted 2027 and 2028 rental rates run from $8,500 for up to 125 guests to $10,700 for 201 to 250. On-site parking fits about 80 vehicles, so large guest lists need a shuttle plan.

Also on Apulia Road, Arlington Acres has a LaFayette mailing address and sits in the Town of Fabius on a 100-acre family farm. The 1862 dairy barn has 2,500 square feet, seats up to 200 and has a 13-foot bar built in the old granary, plus indoor restrooms added in 2019. Couples choose their own caterer. The barn is not air-conditioned, so the owners rely on big doors, cross-breezes and fans, and events end by 10 p.m. in summer and 9 p.m. in late fall.

Madison County

Southeast of Syracuse, Windridge Estate at 2555 U.S. Route 20 in Cazenovia hosts one event per weekend on an 80-acre property and gives the couple the run of the estate all weekend. Ceremonies and receptions can use a white reception barn, the Red Barn, the White Stone Barn, the Belvedere Event Pavilion, the apple orchard or a tent on the lawn, and the Farmer’s Cottage sleeps up to ten. The venue puts the property 35 minutes from Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

Oneida County

In Vernon, The Cannery at 1 Ward St. is an all-inclusive venue for 240-plus guests run by the same company as Dibbles Inn Orchard & Estate on State Route 5. Packages include catering, cake, a DJ, floral staff and a day-of coordinator. The venue rental is listed at $5,500, with menu packages listed at $79.95 to $134.95.

Winery and brewery venues

On the west side of Skaneateles Lake at 2433 W. Lake Road, the Nocek family runs Anyela’s Vineyards and Tract 66 on the same property. Tract 66 is a renovated barn with a newer event wing, indoor and outdoor ceremony spots and views of the vineyard and the lake. Smaller groups of up to 60 can book the winery’s cellar, which has barrel-table seating and a small patio. The Sherwood Inn caters at both, and outside food is not allowed in the cellar.

Outside Cooperstown, Brewery Ommegang at 656 County Highway 33 hosts weddings on a 140-acre farmstead near the Susquehanna River, with a stone fire pit and custom beers among the options. Packages start at $150 per guest for up to 250 people, according to the brewery.

Lake venues

Skaneateles Lake

In the village of Skaneateles, the Sherwood Inn at 26 W. Genesee St. dates to 1807, when Isaac Sherwood built a tavern there for his stagecoach business, according to the inn’s history page. Ceremonies take place on the West Lawn, between the inn and the Hannum House, looking out on the lake.

On West Genesee Street Road, Mirbeau Inn & Spa has a ceremony site on the grounds, a dedicated planner and elopement and micro-wedding packages, and hosts rehearsal dinners with cocktails in the wine bar and dinner in a private dining room. Couples not holding an event there pay $250 to take photos on the property.

Cazenovia Lake

Beside Cazenovia Lake at 5 Albany St., The Brae Loch Inn occupies the 1805 William Burr estate house. The Brown family opened the business as a summer restaurant in 1946 and moved to Cazenovia in 1950. Weddings run from 10 to 200 guests, the downstairs dining rooms seat more than 175, and the lawn rents for $1,000, with tents available on request. There is no room rental fee, and parties of 50 or more get one overnight room free.

Otsego Lake

In Cooperstown, The Otesaga Resort Hotel at 60 Lake St., open since 1909, holds weddings for up to 170 guests on the East Veranda, in the Grand Ballroom and at lakeside sites. The resort used to close after Thanksgiving and now stays open year-round.

Oneida Lake and Owasco Lake

Where the Oneida River leaves Oneida Lake at Brewerton, The Pier at 11 Dockside, with a Central Square mailing address, is a waterfront reception venue. The January 2024 brochure listed a four-hour reception with a four-hour open bar in the packages, with an on-site ceremony at extra cost.

In Cayuga County, the Springside Inn at 6141 West Lake Road in Auburn sits across the road from the western shore of Owasco Lake. The property began as a boys’ school in 1851 and opened as a summer resort in 1919. The inn hosts 30 to 300 guests in the Heritage Room ballroom, on enclosed porches and on five acres of lawn with a gazebo and a pond.

Ballrooms, museums and resorts

Couples who want a city setting have several choices. The Marriott Syracuse Downtown, which opened as the Hotel Syracuse in 1924, has the Grand Ballroom and the Persian Terrace, reception space for a combined 1,000 guests in the largest setup and a Bridal Rotunda included with Grand Ballroom weddings. The Everson Museum of Art rents the whole I.M. Pei building for up to 350 guests at $5,500, plus $500 for a wedding. In Armory Square, SKY Armory seats up to 250 for a reception in Coverly on 3, a 6,800-square-foot loft, with planning, food, bar and flowers in-house. In Utica, the Edward Wales Root Court at Munson seats 250.

Resorts handle lodging and the party in one place. Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona assigns a wedding coordinator, sets up room blocks across the resort’s hotels and gives wedding guests free parking, and CNY Central reported that the new Grand Expo, opened in August 2026, is designed for weddings as well as conventions. At Greek Peak Mountain Resort near Cortland, the Lookout at Hope Lake holds up to 240, and guests stay at Hope Lake Lodge.

Guest rooms and blocks

Room blocks take time to set up. These venues and agencies list lodging help:

  • For blocks of more than 25 rooms, Visit Syracuse, Onondaga County’s tourism promotion agency, helps couples line up hotels.
  • SKY Armory coordinates blocks at the 166-room Best Western Downtown Hotel and Suites and the 140-room Courtyard by Marriott Armory Square, both within two blocks.
  • In Skaneateles, the Sherwood Inn group rents rooms at the inn, the Hannum House, the Packwood House and other village properties, and Mirbeau sets up wedding-weekend room blocks.
  • The Brae Loch Inn has 12 rooms, the Springside Inn has seven plus the Holland House next door, and Windridge’s cottage sleeps ten.

Weather and backup plans

CNY weather turns fast, and the venues plan for it in different ways. The Cannery built a rustic indoor chapel as the ceremony rain plan. Windridge moves events into the Belvedere pavilion and two barns and keeps more than 200 clear umbrellas on hand. The Brae Loch Inn arranges tents for the lawn, and The Orchards has radiant floor heat and rents patio heaters at $50 each. Arlington Acres has no air-conditioning and sets out fans on hot days. SKY Armory and the Marriott are fully indoors downtown, and SKY Armory markets winter weddings; either way, leave travel time for lake-effect snow.

Good to know

These details were checked on October 2, 2026:

  • A license picked up too early can expire. Apply within 60 days of the ceremony, and at least a day ahead.
  • The Pier’s posted wedding prices date from January 2024, so ask for the current rate sheet.
  • Greek Peak’s Meteora Center books June through October only.
  • Turning Stone’s Grand Expo opened at the end of August 2026, so ask for current wedding floor plans.
