Swart-Wilcox House Museum

About

Built in 1807 by Lawrence Swart, a Revolutionary War veteran from Schoharie County, the Swart-Wilcox House is the oldest remaining structure in Oneonta. Today it is a house museum, restored to the Victorian era of 1870 to 1900 when Henry and Phoebe Wilcox raised their family here.

The house shows how Oneonta changed once the railroad and the colleges arrived, and how a sleepy village became a busy city. It is on the historic register and has earned a state preservation award. It is also the focal point of the local fourth-grade history curriculum.

What to Know

  • Its style is German Palatine vernacular, and it dates to 1807.
  • The Wilcox family era, 1870 to 1900, is the period on display.
  • Check the calendar of events before planning a visit around a specific date.
