Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site

About

Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site preserves the ground where the Battle of Oriskany was fought in August 1777, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Revolutionary War. New York State designated it a historic site in 1927 in recognition of its exceptional historic value, and it still draws history fans to Oneida County.

The battle took place in the Mohawk Valley as American militia tried to reach Fort Stanwix, the fort at present-day Rome. Today the site is a quiet stretch of Oneida County countryside where history lovers can walk the grounds and think about how much happened there.
