Matilda Joslyn Gage Center

About

Fayetteville’s famous suffragist, Matilda Joslyn Gage, lived in the Greek Revival house that is now the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center. Today the house is open to visitors as a museum and cultural space, and it serves as the eastern end of the Votes for Women Trail. Gage was one of the leading voices of the suffrage movement.

The house has a second claim to fame: it is the only home in Onondaga County open to the public that was a station on the Underground Railroad. In 1882, L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, married Gage’s youngest daughter, Maud.
