Fort Stanwix National Monument
About
Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome is a faithfully reconstructed fort operated by the National Park Service. The original stood on the Oneida Carrying Place, the portage between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek, and was besieged during the American Revolution in 1777. It is one of the best-known historic sites in Oneida County.
Inside the walls, visitors step into the 18th century, with a museum and exhibits and a fort rebuilt to show how soldiers lived and worked. It stands in downtown Rome, so it is easy to pair a visit with a walk around the city.
