Fort Brewerton Historical Society

About

The Fort Brewerton Historical Society looks after the story of a fort built in 1759 to protect the passage from Albany to the port of Oswego. The society is based in the Central Square and Brewerton area, at the western end of Oneida Lake. That route was a vital link for soldiers, traders and settlers.

Its Oliver Stevens Blockhouse is a log reconstruction built by the society in the 1970s on the plan of a late-1700s blockhouse that once served as a trading post and home for one of the area’s first settlers. Inside, the museum holds about 10,000 years of local history, from Native American materials to military artifacts and 18th-century life.

What to Know

  • The original fort was shaped like an eight-pointed star and ringed by a ten-foot moat.
  • Oliver Stevens, one of the area’s first settlers, lived and traded at the blockhouse site.
  • Exhibits cover 10,000 years of history, including Native American materials and military artifacts.
  • The museum opens on a limited schedule, and special events and private tours are also possible.
  • The society is a member of the Fort Brewerton/Greater Oneida Lake Chamber of Commerce.
