About
Deowongo Island is the only island in Canadarago Lake, in north-central Otsego County near Richfield Springs. Locals and visitors alike know it well, and it carries a long cultural and ecological history that goes back centuries. The island has a unique place in the region’s story.
Native Americans, traders, fishermen, botanists and tourists all made use of the island and the lake, which sat along a popular travel route from the Mohawk Valley. Today it is a conservation area, and the lake around it draws boaters, hikers and winter-sports fans.
