Exeter State Forest is a 1,957-acre state forest near Schuyler Lake in Otsego County, a quiet place for walking, running and snowshoeing. It sits about halfway between Schenectady and Syracuse and roughly 30 miles south of Utica by car.
The forest is a 14-mile drive from Cooperstown and a 34-mile drive from Oneonta. It is one of five state forests in the Leatherstocking Management Unit, named for James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales, two of which are set on or near Otsego Lake. There are no formal trails, so hiking, running and snowshoeing are allowed anywhere on the property.
