Singer Castle on Dark Island

About

Singer Castle on Dark Island is a stone castle in the St. Lawrence River near Chippewa Bay that is open for guided tours. Architect Ernest Flagg designed the castle for Frederick Gilbert Bourne, the fifth president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, and crews built the castle from 1903 to 1905 with granite quarried on nearby Oak Island. The Bourne family called the place The Towers and owned the island until the mid-1960s. Tours cover the furnishings and the castle’s secret passages.
