Muranda Cheese Company

About

Muranda Cheese Company is a farmstead cheesemaker and tasting room at 3075 Route 96, just south of the village of Waterloo in Seneca County, between the Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake wine trails. The Murray family, whose Muranda Holsteins dairy dates to 1991, began making cheese in late 2007 and now produces more than 20 pasteurized cow’s milk cheeses, including British Cheddar, Red Buddy and Muranda Blue. Visitors can take a guided tasting of 12 cheeses in a renovated barn that also holds a shop with cheese, charcuterie and local gifts.

What to know

  • Tom and Nancy Murray founded Muranda Holsteins in 1991, and their son Blane Murray runs the cheese plant and tasting barn.
  • Small groups do not need a reservation for a tasting, while groups of 10 or more are asked to email ahead.
  • Leashed, well-behaved dogs are allowed inside the tasting spaces.
  • The cheesemaking facility is not open for tours because of sanitation concerns.
  • In the summer season a covered deck overlooks the pasture, and the bar pours Finger Lakes wine, beer and cider.
